The Experience

Hill on the Wall, in Gildland, is a luxury guest house run by the Elaine Packer. This grade 2 listed Georgian Farmhouse overlooks the wall, close to Brioswald, and makes an excellent stop, should you decide to stay a night or two in Gilsland.

Elaines accommodation has been included in the Good Hotel Guide for 2020 and handpicked for Britains Finest,

The history of the property dates back to 1595, when it was built as a fortified “bastle” farmhouse, overlooking Hadrian’s Wall.

It’s only natural then that the accommodation retains its charm, and historic intricacies through excellent furnishing and thorough maintenance and upkeep.

Hill on the wall provides a truly excellent Bed and Breakfast experience in the heart the Hadrian’s Wall Path walk. With 3 spacious, and luxuirously furnished en-suite rooms, you can be sure that your stay here will be nothing but relaxing.

Yet despite the luxury of Hill on the Wall, Elaine welcomes bikers and hikers with open arms. Yes, you can spend your day out on the hill, getting muddy like a two-year-old with a large puddle. Yet, you will turn up at the door, ready to shower, relax, and enjoy the wonderful wood burner in the lounge, along with the guest library.

Local Area

“Roman Wall – Hadrian’s Wall
The local area is full of history and unspoiled scenery. Hill on the Wall is in a perfect location for exploring the famous Roman wall marking the Northern border of the former Roman Empire – Hadrians Wall. We’re only a short walk to the wall itself and only 0.25 miles from Birdoswald Roman Fort – one of the best preserved forts on the entire wall.

Gilsland – village nearby
Gilsland village is surrounded by stunning countryside with great walking and cycling opportunities locally whatever standard you enjoy. There’s the Hadrian’s Wall Cycleway – cycle the full length of the wall.

To the west, Brampton and the historic city of Carlisle with its Castle, Cathedral and Tullie House (Border Reivers) Museum, as well as its excellent shopping and restaurants, are well worth a visit.

There’s also a great pub – the Samson Inn – and an excellent tearoom – the House of Meg Tea Rooms. We also recommend Slackhouse Organic Farm Cafe, just 1/2 miles up the road from us.

Walking & Cycling
Several major walking routes such as the Hadrian’s Wall National Trail and the Pennine Way pass through the area, as well as cycle routes such as the Coast to Coast (C2C) and the Hadrian’s Wall Cycle Way (South Shields to Ravenglass).

Watersports & Fishing
Or perhaps water sports such as dinghy sailing, canoeing, rowing and windsurfing are your thing? If so, these are all available locally at Talkin Tarn Country Park. Fishing is also allowed at the tarn.

Other Great Areas Nearby To Visit
The Eden Valley is also just a few minutes drive away also with superb fishing and quiet, easy walks by the river.

Or if you want to escape even more, the peaceful North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is close by too.

We are also only 50 minutes from Ullswater in the Lake District.

Whether it is walking, cycling, horse riding, canoeing or mountain biking, There is always something for everyone in Hadrian’s Wall Country.”
